Husbands, how well do you know your wife?
I’m not talking about her likes and dislikes, her favorite foods or her favorite color. I’m talking about those little, seldom seen by anyone, quirks. For example, my wife cannot walk on a hotel floor with her bare feet. She has no problem sleeping in the bed, showering in the tub, or sitting on the furniture, but who knows how dirty that floor is! So she will wear shoes or slippers and it makes me smile to see that small quirk. So, allow me to ask again, how well do you know your wife?
Let me ask another question…
What do you do with that information about your wife?
I’ve heard husbands, in the company of other men, reveal these quirks in order to “be one of the guys.” They laugh at each others wives and try to top each other with humiliating stories. Even worse, some men reveal these things to OTHER WOMEN! This can lead to bigger problems than just making jest, it can cause the other woman to “console” the man because his wife has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and he needs “support”. Adultery is just around the corner! As another preacher once said, “If you don’t want to fall, don’t walk where it’s slippery!”
The Bible is clear about this point:
“Husband’s, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her” (Ephesians 5:25).
How often do you suppose Christ mocks His church? How many times does he say to the angels, “Let me tell you how dumb My bride is…?” Well, we know the answer. Jesus bought the church with His blood, “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). He cares, supports, and loves His church (Matthew 28:20). So when Paul calls on husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church he calls on us to support, love, cherish, nourish, and even die for our wives! How sad when men do the opposite! How sad when young men see their daddy treat their mother this way!
Husbands, we are to not be bitter toward our wives, “Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them” (Colossians 3:19) so the only choice I have is the opposite, be sweet to her!
Husbands, “Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth” (Proverbs 5:18).
Husbands, understand that when God wanted to describe heaven to us, He used your wife to describe it’s beauty, “Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2).
Nobody knows your wife better than you and nobody knows you better than her! Respect, honor, and cherish each other, quirks and all!
(As a disclaimer, I asked and received permission from my wife to tell about her and hotel floors. Practice what you preach people say!)
