Grace & Salt

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt – Colossians 4:6

What Does God Weigh?

I am not one to know exactly what book and verse in the Bible that has the scripture that I’m looking for. I know it’s in there. I know it’s in the Old or New Testament, but the book eludes me. I could probably give a good guess as to who recorded it, but the exact verse is just not in my memory. Maybe it’s something I should work on, but for now my Bible app and my husband, who knows these sort of things, are my go to sources.

This morning I was looking for a certain verse that I knew was in there. I found it, but the interesting thing is that I stumbled across two other verses that made me pause and ponder. Had I known where that verse for which I was looking for was located, I would not have found these two verses that I think I needed today. God always has a way of providing just what we need at just the right time.

The two verses are Proverbs 16:2

All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the spirits.

and Proverbs 21:2

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts.

Every morning I get on the scale. Every morning I check to see if what I ate or drank or if what exercise I did the day before had any effect on my weight. It’s a habit (good or bad) that I have and if I’m not careful with it will consume me. It has before. That is why I think I stumbled upon these verses today.

The scale, no matter how many times a day I get on it, does not weigh what God weighs. God weighs our hearts and our spirit. Remember back when Samuel was going to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as king, and he was constantly looking at the physical appearance? God told him to basically quit judging them by their cover. The outward appearance doesn’t matter to God. God has and will forever look at the inward man, the heart, and not our physical appearance (1 Samuel 16:7).

While it is difficult for us to see past our physical appearance sometimes (just about everything we see or hear has something to do with physical appearance), we need to be more concerned with what God weighs.

Our hearts.

God wants us to love Him with all our heart (Matthew 22:37). He wants us to have a pure heart (Matthew 5:8). We are cautioned about our treasures and where our heart will be in Matthew 6:19-21. We need to make sure that our hearts are so full of God’s word that we tip the scale against sin.

Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.

-Psalm 119:11

Our spirit.

I have a bad habit of being able to justify just about anything. It’s okay to eat four peanut butter no bake cookies because they are a good source of protein and the oats are heart healthy. I can make it appear healthy in my own eyes. Is it truly healthy just because I say it is? Not really. God, however, guides our spirit through His word toward doing what is right and proper. Our spirit, that part of us that longs to worship something or someone, is what He is weighing. Are we doing what He wants us to do (John 14:15)? Are we worshipping the way He wants us to (John 4:24)? Are we living our lives as a sacrifice for Him (Galatians 2:20) or are we just sacrificing with words and not giving Him our heart (Mark 7:6)?

What God weighs should be more of a concern to us than what our scales say. Our heart and our spirit should be weighed every day to make sure we are staying spiritually healthy so that we will have a long life in eternity with the one who weighs our heart and spirit.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.

– Psalm 19:14
