I had the honor and privilege to say the invocation before the session of our state representatives. Paul told Timothy to pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2) and below is a copy of what I said on that occasion. I encourage all Christians to pray for their leaders. I don’t know if Paul ever had the chance to pray for emperor Nero in front of him, but it is a humbling experience to be praying for them in front of them.
Gracious and Heavenly Father,
As we gather in this esteemed assembly of our state legislature, I humbly come before You, recognizing Your sovereignty over all affairs. I acknowledge that it is Your wisdom that guides us and Your grace that sustains us.
Heavenly Father, grant this assembly wisdom to govern justly and with integrity. Help this body to set aside personal agendas and partisan interests, seeking instead the common good and welfare of all our citizens. May Your principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness be the foundation of all their deliberations and decisions.
Father, I pray for our leaders, both elected and appointed, that they may be filled with wisdom, discernment, and humility as they carry out their duties. Grant them clarity of mind, courage of conviction, and a heart of compassion for those they serve.
Bless, O Lord, the people of our state, from the youngest to the oldest, from every background and walk of life. I pray that we may we be united in our diversity through You and Your word. May we be as one through faith in Your Son.
Father, I commit this assemblies’ deliberations and decisions into Your hands, trusting in Your providence and seeking Your will in all things. May their words and actions bring honor and glory to Your holy name.
All these things I ask in Jesus’ name,
Amen
