Grace & Salt

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt – Colossians 4:6

The Origin of God

The concept of God’s origin is one that our human minds struggle to comprehend because God exists beyond time, space, and creation. Unlike everything we see and know, God had no beginning. He simply is. This truth is foundational to the Christian faith and is revealed throughout Scripture.

In Genesis 1:1, we are told, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This verse introduces us to a profound reality: before there was time, matter, or existence, God was already present. He existed before the beginning because He is the source of the beginning. God is eternal—He has no origin because He is not a created being. Moses affirmed this truth in Psalm 90:2, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” God’s existence is not tied to the created order; He stands outside of it. He is “from everlasting to everlasting,” which means He always was and always will be.

When Moses encountered God at the burning bush and asked His name, God replied, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). This statement reveals God’s self-existence and eternal nature. He is not defined by time, creation, or external forces; He exists because He is God. The name “I AM” signifies that God is self-sufficient, eternal, and unchanging.

The apostle John confirms this eternal nature in Revelation 1:8, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” God spans all of time, yet He Himself is not confined by it. He is the beginning and the end, not because He had a starting point, but because He is the source and conclusion of all things.

Understanding that God has no origin shapes our faith in profound ways. It means that He is not subject to change or decay. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Because He is eternal, His promises are secure. His power does not weaken, His love does not fade, and His authority does not waver.

God’s eternal nature should inspire awe and trust. We serve a God who always was, always is, and always will be. He is the rock upon which we can stand, the unchanging foundation in a constantly shifting world. When life feels uncertain, we can rest in the truth that our God, the eternal, self-existent Creator, is in control.

“I am the LORD, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6). Let that truth bring peace and strength to your heart today.
