Grace & Salt

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt – Colossians 4:6

Living Up To God’s Standard

In a world that constantly shifts its moral compass, believers are called to anchor themselves to something unchanging: God’s standard. His Word provides the blueprint for a life that pleases Him, a life that reflects His holiness. Scripture reminds us, “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:15–16).

Living up to God’s standard is not about earning His love. His love is freely given through Christ, but about responding to that love with obedience. It’s a life marked by humility and a sincere desire to mirror His character. The Psalmist declared, “Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end” (Psalm 119:33). This heart posture, a longing to be taught and to walk in God’s ways, is the beginning of living according to His standard.

However, striving to live righteously can sometimes feel overwhelming. We see our shortcomings and wonder if we’ll ever measure up. That’s why it’s vital to remember the role of grace. Paul reminds us, “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). God does not call us to holiness and then leave us to figure it out on our own; He empowers us through the Holy Spirit to live a life that honors Him.

Living up to God’s standard also requires a daily, intentional pursuit. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). It’s in the daily choices, small and large, that our character is shaped. Each decision to forgive, to love, to obey when it’s hard, builds a life that reflects God’s nature.

Finally, we must set our focus beyond this life. Paul encourages us, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2). When our eyes are fixed on eternity, we find strength to resist the pull of worldly compromise.

Living up to God’s standard is not a destination we reach, but a journey we walk daily with eyes fixed on Jesus, the One who perfectly fulfilled God’s will.
