Grace & Salt

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt – Colossians 4:6

God Only Knows

There are moments in life when we simply cannot understand what God is doing. The pieces don’t fit. The prayers feel unanswered. The path ahead seems hidden behind a fog of uncertainty. In those moments, we often whisper through tears, “Lord, why? What now?” And heaven’s gentle response reminds us of a truth we easily forget…God only knows.

That phrase isn’t a dismissal; it’s a declaration. It means that God sees what we cannot. He understands what we are unable to grasp. His ways are not random or cruel. The Bible tells us, “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite” (Psalm 147:5). Infinite. That means no situation has ever confused Him. No problem has ever overwhelmed Him. No pain has ever escaped His notice.

We spend much of our time trying to figure everything out, or trying to control outcomes, or manage stress, and hold ourselves together. But God invites us to trust Him instead of trying to be Him. He says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6). Leaning on our own understanding is like leaning on a broken crutch, it won’t hold us up for long. But leaning on God? That’s leaning on eternal strength.

In seasons of heartbreak or confusion, you might ask, “Does God see where I am?” Yes, He sees. More than that, He cares. Jesus said, “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matthew 10:30). You don’t even know that much about yourself. That’s how tenderly your Father watches over you.

There are things God allows that we would never choose, sickness, grief, disappointment, loneliness. And yet, God is weaving all of it into a story of redemption and hope. Paul reminds us, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28). We know this, not because we understand every chapter of our lives, but because we know the Author.

Someday, we will look back and see the purpose in what now feels pointless. Someday, the questions will be answered and the tears will be wiped away. Until then, we hold onto God and let Him hold onto us. Because God only knows…and that’s enough.
