Grace & Salt

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt – Colossians 4:6

Lesson from a Spider

During a baseball game in September I noticed this little spider was busy at work weaving a new web.

He likely didn’t know there was a baseball game going one. He had work to do.

He likely didn’t know there were famous ball players nearby. He had work to do.

He likely didn’t know thousands of people were there to watch them and not him. He had work to do.

He likely didn’t know someone was noticing his fascinating work. He had work to do.

He likely didn’t know someone would eventually write a devotional about him. He had work to do.

Sometimes we can get caught up in our surroundings and forget that we have work to do. We can lose our focus and forget our why. We want to shout “look at me” when we should be shouting “look at God”.

This “we” can be me at times. I’m not proud of those times. Thanks be to God for His patience and grace and loving kindness because there are often times I get caught up in this world. I start wondering where is MY spotlight, where is MY entourage, where is MY applause, and what would MY walk up song be?

That spider reminded me of some very important scriptures that night.

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23,24

Those verses are highlighted in my Bible and have been for quite some time. Yet there are times when those words we have hid in our hearts (Psalm 119:11) get too hidden and it takes something as simple as a spider to find them again.

So maybe today we work more like a spider. A cute, little harmless spider who has work to do no matter his surroundings or who is watching or who gets the credit because ultimately God gets all the glory!

God often uses little moments like these to teach us big, needful lessons. What little moments in your life have taught you the biggest, needful lessons?
