It is easy to focus on the problems facing our nation. Every day we hear about division, moral decline, and challenges to biblical values. While those concerns are real, Christians should also pause to recognize the tremendous blessings we enjoy. Living as a Christian in America is a privilege that millions of believers throughout history and around the world have never experienced.
One of the greatest blessings is the freedom to worship openly. We can gather with fellow Christians without fear of government raids or imprisonment. We can own Bibles, teach our children God’s Word, preach in public, and invite others to study the Scriptures. Paul urged Christians to pray for their leaders, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:2). Those words describe a blessing that many Americans have enjoyed for generations.
We are also blessed with incredible access to God’s Word. Most homes contain multiple copies of the Bible. We can read it on our phones, listen to it while driving, and study it with resources that faithful Christians from previous centuries could scarcely imagine. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed” (John 8:31). We have every opportunity to do exactly that.
Another privilege is the ability to influence our communities. Christians can support missions, help those in need, serve in local congregations, and demonstrate the love of Christ through countless acts of kindness. Jesus reminded His disciples, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Our freedoms allow that light to shine in many ways.
These blessings should never lead us to pride but to gratitude. Jesus taught, “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required” (Luke 12:48). The privileges we enjoy also carry responsibility. We should not waste the opportunities God has placed before us. Being a Christian in America is not merely about enjoying religious liberty. It is about using that liberty to honor God. Every worship service we attend, every Bible class we teach, every invitation we extend, and every act of service we perform is possible because of blessings many believers have never known.
May we never take these privileges for granted. Instead, let us thank God for them, pray for our nation, and faithfully use every opportunity to glorify Christ while the door remains open.
